Romper Room

Happy Wednesday! No vlog from me today as I’m kinda grimy and not exactly camera worthy due to the fact I’ve been doing some organizing and rearranging in my home office. Coincidentally, my pal and fellow author, Rachel Spangler just posted a blog about her fancy new office space and I thought it would be fun to discuss everyone’s favorite office/writing space features. One of my requirements is having things around that inspire me, like books, pictures, and memorabilia from writing events. What are some must-haves for your perfect writing space?

  1. If I can’t sit outside under a tree, I definitely need a window. I always have my little notebook and synonym finder within reach. The dogs and cats help too, as long as they stay OFF my computer. I have one cat who thinks it’s an ideal pillow.

  2. I have discovered I write better if I have a window to look out, preferably over yard, grass, birds, flowers. The times when I’ve been writing without that outside view, it just hasn’t worked.

  3. I’ve discovered I write better if I have a window with a view — doesn’t matter what the view is, lawn, trees, woods, birds, animals, golf course, open space. I just think and write better.

  4. I always thought I needed “things” around me – I built nests… Then I worked in a hot desk environment where I had to carry everything on my back and suddenly I found minimalism and now I’m happy with just my notebook, pen and a comfortable chair…my home office is cluttered now but I am trying to tidy it…. Or maybe that’s just procrastinating…..

  5. My quirk of quirks is that I need to have my feet up and be looking at an expansive view, like from my 12th story condo. It’s amazing. Also, since downsizing, I’ve found I don’t really need an office or a desk. I have everything I “need” in an ottoman beside my chair.

  6. I need early morning (4 a.m.) quiet to get started. From there, I can usually write until ten before the noise and light disturb me. I also need a soft lamp and a candle. I’ve never had a good view outside a window, but I can stare at the candle while I think, or the shadows that dance behind it. Although I use a laptop, I prefer to sit at a desk while I write. No idea why. Also music without any words in English or Spanish. Piano solo’s mostly or the Prayer Cycle by Jonathan Elias, for example. Lyrics draw me away from the writing.

  7. Was just thinking along these lines myself, recently cleared out a small room for an office/study/library. Thanks for all the good ideas!!

  8. Mine has to be fairly clutter free. I tend to have lots of scraps of paper and pens and lip gloss and pads of paper of every size and water bottles and to-do lists…eventually I organize it all and clear it away, or I can’t work.

  9. I look out on fields and a forest with the hills of the low Scottish highlands in the distance (on a good day). I love to watch the cows trooping in a line to the byre to be milked regularly at 3pm and home time, 6pm. Today was a bit upsetting, as I saw the cattle truck go in to the field to herd cows in, possibly to the market, or worse, to the abattoir. Couldn’t work after that.
