Giving Voice to Lesbian Fiction
by Karen Wolfer

For more years than I dare to count, I have been a fan of lesbian fiction. So when I took on the care of two sweet, elderly relatives, I packed up my ‘to be read’ stack and headed out of the mountains and onto the wheat plains of Colorado. There, in a farmhouse nearly a hundred years old, I spent much of the winter in a small upstairs bedroom listening, and feeling, the cold, howling winds batter at the outer walls.Farmhouse_in_warmer_times.When I began reading the When Women Were Warriors trilogy by Catherine M. Wilson that winter, I huddled in bed in the evenings with three blankets on the bed and a ski hat pulled tight over my ears. It felt as though I was experiencing some of the scenes that took place in another winter, in another place, during the Bronze Age. I fell in love with that trilogy while in that frozen little room, and knew that it had to become an audio book so that others around the world could enjoy hearing the story, as well as reading it.WWWW_audio_book_cover_RGB

Dog Ear Audio was created with the vision that the wonderful lesfic that was being written today needed to reach an even wider audience. There are many of us who are experiencing vision issues, who have long commutes, or who just enjoy ‘reading’ a story in a different way. Back in 2008, no one was creating audio books for ‘us’. Now, Dog Ear Audio has many titles, the latest being Book 1 of this trilogy that has changed my life.

At the same time I was discovering WWWW, the legendary singer, songwriter, author, Grammy and Audie winner, Janis Ian, was also finding herself entranced with the books. Through a series of serendipitous events, Catherine met Janis at a concert and later agreed to be the narrator on this dream project.

Fast forward to today, and I’ve moved into a higher—and warmer—bedroom in the old farm house, and the dream of turning this beloved story into an audio book, both as CD sets and as a download, has come true.

Winter is a time for huddling inside, keeping all dreams alive, allowing the muses and Fate to find us in those quiet times, so that when the light and warmth of Spring comes again,as it always will,we can get out there and share the magic. The magic that even can be found in a farmhouse on the plains.Frozen_Farm_Bell

    • Barrett isn’t just leaving nice words here. She went on and on and on , about how great Janis’ reading is. I already knew how great the story was and hopefully we will be able to get this on the read list for the local group.

  13. Just discovered this treasure last month. “Devoured” would probably be the most accurate description of my reading lol. My husband loved it as well. We listen to audio books quite often and would love to add this gem to our collection. Here’s hoping the other two books aren’t far behind!
