If you want to know how much value a friend puts on your relationship – and how much they truly like you – do the following:
First, ask them if you can stay at their house – even if you’ve only been Facebook friends up to that point… Good friends, involving months of communication, and several intense phone calls – but, in reality, you’ve still never met face to face.
Next, ask them to pick you up at the airport (which is currently under construction) DURING rush hour traffic.
Then learn your plane was 45 minutes late arriving from it’s scheduled time, and realize that previously mentioned said friend had to circle the arrival area fighting four lanes of traffic around an airport (under construction) during rush hour – for 45 minutes…
Have I painted the details?
Well, she must have liked me tremendously – because (after all THAT) I still received a giant, warm hug and she was (still) happy to finally meet me! As I was to meet Jove Belle 🙂
Being back in the Pacific Northwest was a wonderful experience – a warm, homecoming. The weather was beautiful and the trees stretched far into the sky. It’s a place where you can smell the green.
I’ve never been privileged enough to meet a more awesome group of women in one place!
(I won’t count the Nuns, I wont. I wouldn’t and didn’t, have any fun in convent. They would make me sit still… Oh, the memories of the wooden straight ruler.)
I also had the honor to share my room with and finally meet my ‘sister-from-another-mother-and-mister’ after 4 years of friendship 🙂 Lorraine Howell The Happy Lesbian Housewife. Check her out – she’s hilarious!
Women and Words gave me a home-base and a place to “land” when I stopped to breathe (which wasn’t often!) But really, who doesn’t want to hang out with Andi Marquette and RG Emmanuelle? AND Jove Belle? 🙂
Last year, when I won the 2013 Best Paranormal for Sometime Yesterday, I was only able to attend the award ceremony in Dallas, Texas – I did meet some amazing women, and still more at my while attending the Lonestar Lesfic Festival in Austin two years running.
I am humbled by how many people remembered me this year in Portland. It was an unparalleled experience for me, to be included in a group of peers I never expected (or dreamed of).
I think that next year’s GCLS – being held in New Orleans – We should have a game “Where the heck is Yvonne H?” And the attendees can put their sightings on a map. Anyone who was in Portland can truly attest to my ADD behavior, and how quickly I can disappear… 🙂
The generosity of spirit at the conference was outstanding. And I consider it a major blessing to have been able to attend. But to have won the Award for 2014 Best Paranormal Romance for The Awakening?
ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?
So, in shock – I tried to think of something to say – but instead gave the conference something they hadn’t heard from me in four days –
A moment of Silence…
I think everyone was shocked!
The entire experience was surreal.
Thanks again to GCLS, the readers, authors, publisher, and everyone – who made this the best experience of my life (so far!)
Shout out to the smoking section!
