So, here I am in DC for the 2016 GCLS Conference. In addition to all the panels, signings, and networking, I’m excited about being in this particular locale because I have another DC based political thriller in the works and this is the ideal opportunity to do research. In that vein, my pal, VK Powell and I made a trip this morning to the Hoover Building aka FBI Headquarters. We learned quite a bit about FBI operations, a lot of which we already knew, but I had absolutely no idea the FBI has their very own Starbucks and I’ll definitely have to work that into a story.
In all seriousness, there is no substitute for actually visiting a place that you intend to include in your novel. The sights, the smells, the sounds – you just can’t get all that from Google searches.
Our next stop was the bar at the famed Hays-Adams hotel, Off the Record. We sipped martinis and people watched at this well-known spot for DC insiders and I can definitely see a scene in an upcoming novel featuring the rich red tones and fun political caricatures of this basement bar.
Have I mentioned how much I love my job?
