So, here I am in DC for the 2016 GCLS Conference. In addition to all the panels, signings, and networking, I’m excited about being in this particular locale because I have another DC based political thriller in the works and this is the ideal opportunity to do research. In that vein, my pal, VK Powell and I made a trip this morning to the Hoover Building aka FBI Headquarters. IMG_3642We learned quite a bit about FBI operations, a lot of which we already knew, but I had absolutely no idea the FBI has their very own Starbucks and I’ll definitely have to work that into a story.

In all seriousness, there is no substitute for actually visiting a place that you intend to include in your novel. The sights, the smells, the sounds – you just can’t get all that from Google searches.

Our next stop was the bar at the famed Hays-Adams hotel, Off the Record. IMG_3653We sipped martinis and people watched at this well-known spot for DC insiders and I can definitely see a scene in an upcoming novel featuring the rich red tones and fun political caricatures of this basement bar.

Have I mentioned how much I love my job?

  1. I spent a couple of years of my military career serving in the DC area…did a lot of exploring of the city, the monuments, the museums and more. It offers a lot. Took my wife there to marry her for her first trip ever to the city. Would love to take her back and show her so much more than we got to see in 36 hours there. We couldn’t make it GCLS this year due to other commitments (big charity softball tournament this weekend we’re both involved in) so my D.C. gift to her will have to wait until another time. Have Fun and enjoy!

  2. Sounds like an amazing place to visit for you both professionally and personally! I look forward to reading how you use this time in your upcoming novels. Have a great con 🙂
