April 2017 marked the official launch of Dirt Road Books, a publishing cooperative created by me, Andi Marquette, R.G. Emanuelle, Gill McKnight, Blythe Rippon, and Michelle L. Teichman. As part of our corporate standards and our mission as individual humans, we prioritize being of service and leaving things better than we find them. Thus, we spend a lot of time discussing how we can best serve our communities, both physical and virtual. National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo, is a natural match for our goals.
NaNo is an event based on the principles of community and friendship, on finding support from folks who share a common goal: write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. And so, we decided to put our own spin on it.
Three of the six founders, Gill McKnight, Jove Belle, and Michelle L. Teichman, are participating this year. We are professional writers with far too many distractions. NaNo is the perfect event to get us working on our next novels and supporting one another in the process.
As an extension of that, we thought it would be nice to invite other writers to join in the fun. But an invitation didn’t seem like quite enough. Michelle, brilliant woman that she is, suggested that we review the manuscripts of the women who finish the challenge with us. We settled on this: For those who start and finish with us, DRB will give your manuscript a professional review. For real. And these women are pretty kickass at editing, so the feedback will be top shelf. You can read all about the details on the Dirt Road Books Blog.
We also decided to host a series of virtual write-ins. This gives us a place to meet and encourage each other. We’re using Facebook because it’s a familiar platform for most of us. We’d love for you to join us. You can find the details for that on the event page on Facebook.
So, what do you say? Want to join Gill, Michelle, and I as we take on NaNoWriMo?
