“We used to talk about love…”
“Huh?” Glancing up from mindless texting, I sat up straighter slyly glancing at my watch. How long had I been missing?
“We used to talk about love … you know … love.”
“Uh-oh. I’m in big trouble.” Quickly stashing my phone away … “I love you honey, I’m sorry if I don’t say it enough, I do love you, like totally and forever.”
“I know you love me, PoochieKoo. I love you too. What I mean, ‘we’, as in our society, our community. I remember growing up in the 60’s and 70’s. It was all about LOVE, and Peace.”
“Oh yeah, I remember the songs like, “Come on people now, Smile on your brother, Everybody get together, Try to Love one another, Right now.”
“Right, that’s the point. It seems like our culture is all about shade and insults and who can trash each other better.”
“It has always been there at some level, but today it comes right from the top, the leader of the free world. But, honey, we don’t have to be part of that. Kindness is personal, empathy is human. We can deliberately be compassionate and understanding. We can choose to seek out goodness in others. We can smile more.”
“Do you think that would make a difference to the world??
“I do. It would certainly change our lives and the lives of our friends and family.”
“Can we make a commitment to deliberate kindness?”
“Yes. Let’s do that and, honey, you can take your phone back out. It’s ok.”
Happy Valentine’s Day,
